1. Context

Our non-profit organisation, Humanitarian Designers, conducted an intensive 40-hour workshop from November 14th to 18th, 2022. Nine students from the French design school ENSCI-Les Ateliers participated in this course. This report provides an overview of the various activities we have organised and offers guidelines for those interested in teaching humanitarian design.

2. Stakeholders

Humanitarian Designers

We are a non-profit organisation registered in France as an Association Loi 1901 since January 2021. Our mission is to connect the humanitarian and design sectors. Currently, we have an online community of over 400 people, and we are committed to expanding our knowledge and sharing it with an even broader audience.

ENSCILes Ateliers

ENSCI – Les Ateliers, the "École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle – Les Ateliers," is a prestigious school located in Paris, France. Since 1982, ENSCI has been known for its innovative pedagogy, which emphasises workshops that allow students to explore, iterate, and develop their own curriculum and projects.

Watizat

During the week, we partnered with the French non-profit organisation "Watizat", which advocates for access to information for people in exile in France. On the third day, we took the students to "Les Amarres," a welcome centre in Paris. There, they conducted a workshop with participants who were employees, volunteers, and users of Watizat.

We would like to thank all the stakeholders involved for their trust and collaboration.

3. Facilitators

After reaching out to our online community, four designers have taken on the responsibility of organising and teaching during this week-long course in Paris. They distributed the tasks during weekly calls and also convened in Brussels to finalise the course and get to know each other. During the workshop, only two designers were teaching per day.
